2014 Hilton Head Wine Fest WHAT NOT TO MISS

2014 Hilton Head Wine Fest WHAT NOT TO MISSIt's just about here! That time of year when our spring is just beginning to pop and so are the corks springing from the sparkling wines at the Wine Fest.

WHAT:     Hilton Head Wine and Food Fest - Public Tasting

WHEN:     SATURDAY, MARCH 15

               Noon - 4PM

WHERE:   Honey Horn Plantation, Hilton Head Island

WHO:       Anyone who is 21 years and older

TICKETS:  $45 General Admission

WHO TO CONTACTEvent Organizers

Wine fest tasting tablesI've not only attended 17 of the 29 Hilton Head Wine and Food festivals but have also volunteered for five years doing everything from setting up the spitting buckets to attaching signs identifying the various distributors, and stapling the skirts on the tables. I'd have to say that the tasting part instead of the working part is much more fun!

WHAT TO EXPECT

After presenting your ticket and ID at the gate, you'll be given a wine glass as well as a listing of all the medal winners and diagram showing the layout of the various distributors and the wines that they will be pouring.HINT: the medal winners will be in high demand by those who have come to the festival before. They are usually in short supply so best to go to those locations first.

DAY'S EVENTS

There are various restaurants that have good nibbles to enjoy throughout the day and the Waiters' Race through a straw obstacle course carrying trays with glasses filled with wine is really fun to watch. There are cooking demonstrations throughout the day as well as a Grey Goose Bartenders' Challenge.

INSIDER'S TIPS

BUY TICKETS PRE-EVENT: There are usually long lines so it's much easier to just order and pay on-line.

BRING YOUR ID AND CASH: This is an adults only event. Please leave little ones at home and leave your pets at home too.

PARKING: There is no charge for parking but it's best to get there early too. Parking is in the fields of Honey Horn so there are some ruts.

BE PREPARED: There have been some years that it's been cold, some years that it's been very hot and some where it's been drizzling all day. This festival goes on rain or shine, so just keep a weather eye.

BRING WATER AND BREAD: Yes, they sell water there, and there are sandwiches, and sometimes baguettes but you'll enjoy yourself more if you come prepared. You'll also want to use the water for rinsing your glass periodically.

Favorite Italian wineDON'T GUZZLE: I know this should go without saying and is a bit gross but the buckets located at every table are for dumping the remaining wine from your glass. The pour is usually about 1 ounce which doesn't seem like very much until you realize that four tables are put together into a square and on each table there are about 12 bottles of wine (and did I mention that there are about 25 stations each with the 4 tables - so, now you have the potential to taste 48 ounces at each station; hence, my advice, don't guzzle.

This is just one of the many festivals that we have on Hilton Head. Maybe this would be a great place to live! Search for a home and live your dream!

I've been down to HHI quite a few times and have always been wowed by the hospitality - always amazing food, wine and company! Hope it's a blast!

Suzanne - it totally will be - AND the NYTimes Wine critic, Eric Asimov will be in attendance at one of the separate functions! We're definitely getting noticed - too back you won't be able to come - maybe next year :-)
