HILTON HEAD GULLAH CELEBRATION MONTH 2014If it's February it means a whole month of wonderful celebrations honoring and recognizing the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage of the lowcountry.

What is Gullah?

Gul·lah ˈgələ/ noun noun: Gullah; plural noun: Gullahs 1. a member of a black people living on the coast of South Carolina and nearby islands. 2. the Creole language of the Gullah, having an English base with elements from various West African languages. It has about 125,000 speakers. adjective adjective: Gullah 1. relating to the Gullah or their language.

Beyond the exact definition Gullah is a way of life, a respect for the beauty of nature identified by a lovely lilting language that has its roots in history.

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor extends along the southeastern Gullah batik on silkcoast from Jacksonville, FL through Georgia and South Carolina to Wilmington, NC and extends 30 miles inland. Established by Congress, the legislation was sponsored by Rep. James Clyburn and passed in 2006. This corridor falls under the purview of the National Park Service and is one of only 49 cultural heritage corridors around the country that centers on African-American history and culture.

What can you do to celebrate Gullah in February?

February 1-25; "Arts of We People XVII" Monday - Saturday 10AM to 6PM at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina - FREE

Enjoy original Gulla art including paintings, the famous sweetgrass baskets and other media.

FOOD!

Saturday February 1; "Taste of Gullah" from noon to 4PM Come to the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina and enjoy food and entertainment including gumbo, conch stew, sweet potato pone, fried fish and more.

February 8; "Ol' Fashioned Gullah Breakfast'; 8AM to noon; St. James Baptist Church (209 Dillon Road, Hilton Head Island) $12/plate. BEST shrimp and grits, stewed oysters, fried fish prepared by OOman Chef Louise Cohen and other native islanders.

Saturday February 22; "Gullan Men Wha Cook"; 11AM to 3PM; St. James Baptist Church, $5/person, this is a great chance to sample all kinds of Gullah creations made by all-male cooking teams representing churches, non-profits, and caterers. Vote for your favorite dishes!

The event with the biggest turnout occurs SATURDAY AND SUNDAY FEBRUARY 15 AND 16; the Arts Craft and Food Festival. Beginning at 11AM and continuing until 5PM at the Coastal Discovery Museum, this fun day is $5 for adults and $3 for children. There are cultural demontrations, quilt and jewelry making, basket making, traditional Gullah foods and music!
