FAQ What to do if it RAINS ON HILTON HEAD DURING THE HERITAGE?

People are running around the island with mopy faces, the traffic is snarled because today, and apparently this whole weekend, it's supposed to rain on Hilton Head Island, SC which just happens to be THE SOCIAL WEEKEND of the year at the RBC Heritage Golf Tournament.

OK, so it's raining. It's not a COLD rain, it's a fairly steady rain and it's 62 degrees - not our normal low 70's weather and everyone wants to know what to do. You've come to our island with visions of bright green golf courses, bright white sand traps, and breathtaking views over to Daufuskie Island.

There is indeed life on Hilton Head even with the rain. First, kids don't really care. They like to splash in the puddles and actually enjoy riding bicycles and in fact riding through the puddles and getting soaked. There are 108 miles of paths around the island from quiet paths through overhanging angel oaks, to the forest preserve, to palm lined streets, to open spaces where you can watch the ocean churning.

We also have the Sandbox, an interactive children's museum just off of Pope Avenue and well within riding distance. They have all kinds of fun climbing things, crafts, story telling time and places for mom, dad, aunt, uncle, grandparents to sit while the kids work off some energy.

Enjoy the rainThough only partially covered, Coligny Plaza is the original shopping area for Hilton Head and loaded with shops selling everything from alligator claws, to shark teeth, to beach shirts, and you could spend hours at the original Coligny Ace Hardware store where they have everything and anything you can imagine - for the parents, it will remind you of where you went as a kid where you could wander through the crowded, dark aisles and see all kinds of mysterious and neat looking tools.

I will admit that this rain puts a damper on going to miniature golf but there's always running around inside Shelter Cove Mall. The other popular place is certainly to head off the island to the outlet malls - might as well shop and stop in those designer places as long as you have the time.

There are plenty of places to get massages and facials too. Maybe it's going to be a relaxing vacation rather than one where you run all over. Perhaps you could even play games quietly together as a family. Memories are made of together time - not necessarily with schedules.
